Don't spoil the movement by manufacturing ideas

While in Melbourne, Prabhupada had heard news that some of Tusta Krsna Swami's men had spread the rumour that Prabhupada would visit their farm in Auckland, but not the ISKCON temple. This was proof, they said, that they were correct in the long running dispute. On hearing this, Prabhupada had immediately cancelled his plans to visit Tusta Krsna's farm, adding that anyone who wanted to see him in Auckland could come to the temple.
Prabhupada was well aware of the continuing tension between the two groups. As his disciples sat with him in his room after the interview, he shed more light on the subject.
Tusta Krsna described his kirtana parties, conducted two nights a week. "We have 80 men. A huge kirtana with five mrdangas and guitars. We get a huge crowd from the whole street."
Prabhupada was happy to hear it. "That will make you triumphant. Continue kirtana. That is very nice. Kirtana and book distribution. This is also kirtana. So do it enthusiastically. Keep yourself pure. No one will be able to do any harm to you. Krsna will give you protection."
Society, Prabhupada explained, was suffering due to its sinful activities. "These rascals, they do not understand. They think, 'Hare Krsna movement is disturbing'. A rascal civilisation. So let us try our best."
Prabhupada looked around the room at the temple leaders -- Yasomatinandana, Tusta Krsna Swami and Guru Krpa. He spoke a word of caution. "Don't spoil the movement by manufacturing ideas. Don't do that. Go on in the standard way, keep yourself pure; then the movement is sure to be successful. But if you want to spoil it [by changing things], whimsically, then what can be done? It will be spoiled. If you manufacture whims and disagree and fight amongst yourselves, then it will be another edition of these so-called movements. It will lose spiritual strength. Always remember this."
Prabhupada a gain reminded the devotees that, regardless of how it was presented, the maha-mantra, when chanted purely, had great power in and of itself.
"Now, actually, outsiders are surprised. 'What power this Hare Krsna mantra has that it is changing people so quickly?' It has to be admitted. Unless it has got power, how it is changing?" The devotees, he stressed, should therefore be careful not to alter the process by which the mantra is received, by polluting it with their material conceptions.
"So we have to keep that power. Don't make it an ordinary musical vibration. It is a different thing, spiritual. Although it seems like a musical vibration, it is spiritual, completely. Mantrausadhi-vasah. Even by mantra the snakes can be charmed. So mantra is not an ordinary sound vibration. We have to keep the mantra in potency, potent, by offenceless chanting, by remaining pure. If you pollute the mantra, then it will lose its effect."
