About Me
I found out about Krishna Consc. around 1973. I bought a BTG from a devotee on 34th St. The cover caught my attention, so I began reading. After a few months of hesitation, I began to go to the NYC temple when it was in Brooklyn on Henry St. I did move into the NYC temple when it was on 55th St. I stayed for a few years and was initiated in 1978 by HH Satsvarupa Dasa Goswami. (I am still trying to find out the exact date. I believe it was in Sept.) My duties were helping around the temple, orange juice cart, and finally pujari. THAT was the best duty for me. (I actually tried to do book distribution with another mataji, but I was terrible at it and I never went out again.) I was also MOST FORTUNATE to see Srila Prabhupada twice! Once at the NYC temple on 55th ST. He came to see the new home for Their Lordships Sri Sri Radha-Govinda. I was on line with all the other mothers on one side of the hall that leads to the temple room. As he was walking to the temple room, I wanted to offer a rose I had in my hand, but like everyone else, I was hoping he would look at me. I waited until the very last second before he passed and gently threw the rose at his feet. Well, guess what?! He did look and as he did he put his hands together to be so gracious and merciful as to acknowledge my small gift. Oh, prabhus and matajis - you just don't know the BLISS I was in!!! The second time I saw Srila Prabhupada was at the 1974 or 1975 Philadelphia Rathya Yatra. Unfortunately for me, I am a dunce! I could not fully appreciate Srila Prabhupada's mercy through his glance or his words. I fell down due to greed - and more importantly, NOT chanting my rounds or reading properly - and left the temple the next year. [For those of you who know of Mother Shilavati, she gave me a "good lecture" on being a BIG nonsense!!!] I felt horrible because I let down my spiritual master and Srila Prabhupada. In 1980, I joined the Navy and stayed for 20 yrs. Near the end of my enlistment, a devotee was kind enough to write me a letter describing Guru Maharaja's sickness and the need for donations. Because of this, I got back into my chanting and sent donations for my spiritual master, which I continue to do at the present time. I am able to attend the NYC temple, although irregularly. Even though I have made a gigantic mess of my life, I am really (underline really) trying to get back into my devotee ways even though I am now 63, work for the state, and am attending school. I humbly ask for the prayers of all the devotees out there to ask the disciplic succession to forgive me and to keep me on the true path of Krishna Consciousness. And for all of you who will go back, please dig a little hole in the most auspicious ground of Vrndavana, and save that hole for me. This way, when all of you exalted devotees step on that hole, I may be blessed and have instant liberation. Thank you very much!!
