While in Sydney, John's little son, Yenaka, continued to display a childish, innocent eagerness for Prabhupada's association. Prabhupada noted Yenaka's enthusiasm as a positive sign of future spiritual success. In the afternoon, as Prabhupada sat behind his desk talking to devotees, the young boy ran right into the room, bowed down, and ran out. "Just see how eager he is," Prabhupada exclaimed with a grin.

An initiation ceremony, held in the backyard of the Sydney temple, was to be the largest ever of its kind for Australia. Over 25 devotees from all over Australia would be receiving initiation. Devotees had dug a massive fire pit in the centre of the yard. Buckets of grains and ghee, and piles of wood were stacked next to the two-metre wide arena. By mid-afternoon, under clear blue skies, Sunday feast guests, locals and neighbours, devotees and their family members had gathered expectantly.
Telvision crews set up their cameras. A small record player continually played the Govindam single. Ladies made last-minute adjustments to Prabhupada's vyasasana, set up at the back of the yard and flanked with palm trees and shaded from the sun and wind by a brocade canopy. The festive atmosphere was fully sanctified as Srila Prabhupada, looking relaxed and effulgent, walked from his adjoining house. Surveying the extensive arena from his raised seat, Prabhupada reminded the devotees of an emperor on his throne, or a general reviewing his troops.
The candidates for initiation sat in a large circle round the fire pit. One by one, as their names were called, the devotees rose, approached Srila Prabhupada, and garlanded him with fragrant frangipani flowers. After bowing down, they paused to listen as Srila Prabhupada asked them to recite their vows.
"What are the four rules?"
"No meat-eating, no intoxication, no gambling and no illicit sex."
"And how many rounds will you chant?"
"Sixteen."
Sometimes Prabhupada would lean forward and, raising his eyebrows, add "Minimum!"
Little Yenaka, not wanting to miss out on initiation, also approached and began crawling up the steps of Prabhupada's vyasasana. Prabhupada smiled broadly. Srila Prabhupada said: "No, no. Not now. In a few more years."
The lecture and fire ceremony completed, Prabhupada prepared to return to his house. A tumultuous kirtana completed the auspicious event. As a devotee applied a mixture of ghee and fire ashes -- in the form of a black dot -- to the forehead of every person present, a couple of local children ran forward to receive the sacred marking. Their mother called to them nervously, "Come away from there!"
Prabhupada turned to the lady and, laughing, gave his light-hearted decree. "No, no, they can't leave now. They've joined!"

After the feast, Srila Prabhupada spoke with John and his wife, Carol in his room. John explained to Prabhupada that they had given their son the name Yenaka Betsoon -- an American Indian name meaning "Magic Boy from the Stars". Prabhupada, looking thoughtful, gently corrected them.
"Actually, you are pronouncing it wrong. It should be Janaka -- J-a-n-a-k-a."
Prabhupada explained that Janaka was the name of a great saintly king. The couple took heed of Prabhupada's advice and from that day Yenaka became Janaka.
